Albany, New York

Empire State Plaza

The Empire State Plaza is a massive government office complex and the most recognizable landmark in Albany. The complex was the idea of New York State’s Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller and constructed from 1959 to 1976 at a cost of $1.7 billion. The Empire State Plaza houses various state government agencies with more than 11,000 state employees working here. The complex is connected to the Times Union Center by a pedestrian bridge and New York State Capitol by an underground tunnel.

The architecture of the Empire State Plaza is Modernist and situated on a six-floor marble platform. The complex comprises of several buildings including:
  • The four “Agency” office buildings;
  • Erastus Corning Tower;
  • The Egg (performing arts center);
  • The Cultural Education Center (museum, library, and archives);
  • The Robert Abrams Building for Law and Justice;
  • Legislative Office Building (LOB); and
  • Swan Street Building.
The Erastus Corning Tower, at a height of 589 feet (180 meters), is the tallest building in New York State outside of New York City.

The complex features several state memorials including those dedicated to World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Fallen Firefighters Memorial. There are also several fountains across the complex and an ice skating rink. The Empire State Plaza Art Collection (paintings, sculptures, and tapestries) is located throughout the complex including the concourse, buildings, and outdoors. The concourse connects the buildings within the complex and itself an “underground city” featuring food courts, several retailers, banks, a post office, bus station, and a visitor center.
