Albany, New York

Museums & Galleries

Albany may not have that many museums as New York City but does offer two great museums. One is the New York State Museum, located on the south side of the Empire State Plaza. The museum explores the cultural and natural history of New York State and exhibits include art, prehistoric and historic artifacts, geological samples, and paleontology specimens. Another is the Albany Institute of History & Art, located in Downtown Albany. The Institute is devoted to documenting the life and culture of the Upper Hudson Valley region.

The USS Slater is a decommissioned destroyer escort that once served in the US Navy during World War II. The ship is now a museum along the city’s waterfront and designated a National Historic Landmark. The Irish American Heritage Museum tells the story of the Irish people and their contribution to the history and culture of the United States. Irish contributions include service in the military and involvement in the labor movement. The Albany Center Gallery exhibits contemporary art by artists from the region including paintings, sculptures, installations, and photographs.
