New York State Museum

 
 
New York State Museum is located on the south side of the Empire State Plaza, on Madison Avenue. It is the oldest as well as largest state museum in the United States. The New York State Museum is a research-backed institution and managed by the New York State Education Department's Office of Cultural Education. The museum occupies the first four floors of the 10-story Cultural Education Center that also houses the New York State Archives and New York State Library.

The New York State Museum explores the cultural and natural history of New York State. Exhibits include art, prehistoric and historic artifacts, geological samples, and paleontology specimens. Most of the exhibits are located on the museum’s first floor while the second and third floors are closed to the public. The State Museum opens daily to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free but welcomes donations from visitors.
