The Bronx, New York City

Eats & Restaurants

Little Italy

Besides Little Italy in Manhattan, the Bronx also has its own Little Italy located along Arthur Avenue with its Italian character and atmosphere. You can find plenty of Italian restaurants, cafes, delis, bakeries, and pizzerias in this part of the Bronx. Furthermore, the place is gaining culinary attention as a destination for Italian dining in New York City. Not everything is Italian here, there are a few Albanian and Mexican restaurants, but the street still resembles somewhere in Italy. To complement the authentic feel of Little Italy, there are the Italian cheese and pasta shops, markets, butchers, and the members’ only social clubs.

Manhattan’s Little Italy is a tourist district of New York City, and the restaurants here cater to the tourist crowd and along with it tourist prices. On the other hand, Little Italy in the Bronx is an Italian American neighborhood serving the community rather than tourists. Thus, restaurants here serve the community preparing dishes the traditional way for the authentic Italian food. Furthermore, prices are down to earth and reasonable – not tourist prices.  Popular on the menu are the Italian pasta dishes and brick oven pizzas with plenty of mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, and anchovies to go.

A favorite in Little Italy is Mario’s Restaurant, an award winning restaurant managed by the Migliucci family and has been around since 1919. Besides the pasta dishes, Mario’s serves great Italian-style seafood, steaks, and fresh sauces. Roberto Restaurant is a charming restaurant and has been around since the late 1980s. The restaurant specializes in dishes from southern Italy, often using seasonal ingredients purchased from the neighborhood stores. Dominick’s Restaurant has been around since 1966 and often packed with locals and former residents. Patrons sit on communal tables and you may end up sharing a table but the food is good that nobody’s complaining.
