Maritime Industry Museum

The Maritime Industry Museum at Fort Schuyler (also known as the Fort Schuyler Museum) is located within the campus of the State University of New York Maritime College. Constructed in 1856, Fort Schuyler is an irregular pentagon-shaped building overlooking the Long Island Sound. The fort’s heavy armaments once protected the strategic waterway. The museum focuses on the maritime history of the Port Authority of New York Port and New Jersey. Museum opening hours are Mondays to Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

A walk through the museum in the fort is like a passage through time. Comprising of two floors, the exhibits are donations from the maritime industry. Collections include old photographs, paintings, models of sailing vessels, memorabilia, tools used by mariners, and navigational instruments. The main exhibit describes the “Evolution of Seafaring” from the ancient Phoenicians to the present day. The “Underwater Exhibits” comprises of artifacts recovered from sunken ships from the waters in the area.
