Brooklyn Academy of Music 

 
 

The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is located in the Fort Greene neighborhood and nearby the Flatbush Avenue Subway Station in Downtown Brooklyn. The academy has for the last 100 years been a leading center for performing arts and culture in Brooklyn. It is the venue for various concerts, musicals, dance, plays, and film screenings. The academy itself comprises of the Howard Gilman Opera House and Rose Cinemas housed in the Peter Jay Sharp Building at Lafayette Avenue. The Harvey Theater is housed in another building located a few blocks away at Fulton Street.

The Howard Gilman Opera House and Harvey Theater are venues for varieties of performances. Famous personalities that have performed here include Paul Simon, Eric Clapton, and Bette Midler. The Howard Gilman Opera House is also the venue for DanceAfrica, a festival held during the Memorial Day weekend. DanceAfrica features traditional and contemporary African dance and music by groups from the United States and Africa.

The Rose Cinemas is a modern cineplex comprising of four theaters with seating capacities ranging from 100 to nearly 300. The theaters regularly screen art films including classics, independent, and new releases. The Rose Cinemas are venues for the BAMcinemaFest film festival held in June, screening some of the best contemporary films by independent filmmakers.

BAMCafé is located at the Peter Jay Sharp Building, serving dinner before performances at the Howard Gilman Opera House. BAMCafé also offers free live performances with its dining every Friday and Saturday nights featuring varieties of music including rock, pop, jazz, R&B, and music from around the world. The menu at BAMCafé is seasonal and you can get a good meal here at reasonable prices.
