Brooklyn Museum 

 
 

The Brooklyn Museum opened in 1897 and is the second largest art museum in New York City after the Metropolitan Museum on Art in Manhattan. The museum is located on the Eastern Parkway nearby the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Prospect Park. The Brooklyn Museum has an extensive collection from various cultures including the United States, Europe, Middle East, Far East, Africa, and the Pacific Islands. Collections include ancient, classical, and contemporary art. The museum is itself is an architectural masterpiece, designed in the Beaux-Arts or neoclassical style.

Art galleries include the Egyptian Galleries comprising seven galleries with collections from ancient Egypt until the 4th century. The Asian Galleries include collection of paintings and sculptures from China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, and the Indian sub-continent. Collections from the Luce Center for American Art ranges from colonial to modern period including Native American and Spanish colonial artworks. Other galleries at the Brooklyn Museum include the Islamic, African, Decorative Art, and Contemporary Arts Galleries.

Besides the permanent exhibits, the Brooklyn Museum also organizes temporary exhibits including paintings and sculptures from American artists. Regular events include music and dance performances, art making, and film screenings. The Brooklyn Museum also offers free gallery tours lead by a guide and usually starting from the Rubin Lobby on the 1st floor. To take back home, there is the museum's gift shop offering a range of items including books on art, children's books, posters, fine prints, jewelry, and apparel.
