Many of the city’s theaters are found in Downtown Buffalo and though not in the same league as the Theater District in New York City, it is nevertheless a major destination in Western New York for high quality theater performances. Theater productions in Buffalo range from the mainstream to the innovative, attracting more than a million visitors each year. A major theater is the Shea's Performing Arts Center located in the Theater District in Downtown Buffalo. The 900-seat theater is one of the largest in Buffalo and a major venue for touring Broadway productions. The 2,800-seat Kleinhans Music Hall is highly regarded for its superb acoustics and the home of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. The 250-seat Kavinoky Theatre is located on the campus of D’Youville College and has an established reputation for producing quality performances. The 136-seat MusicalFare Theatre and 96-seat Alleyway Theatre are two non-profit professional theater companies, also regarded for their quality productions.

The Theater Alliance of Buffalo is a membership of 20 theater groups in Buffalo including the Shea’s Performing Arts Center, Kavinoky Theatre, MusicalFare Theatre, and the Alleyway Theatre. The alliance is a collection of some of the finest theater groups in Western New York and responsible for attracting talents from theater communities in other cities including Canada.
