Money & Currency

The currency in the United States is the US dollar, divided into 100 cents. Visitors usually see the USD abbreviation outside the United States to represent the US dollar but within the country the “$” symbol is more common. Visitors can exchange their foreign currency (namely Euro, British Pound, and Yen) into the US dollar at several Travelex and American Express Travel branches in Manhattan, New York City. Visitors can also cash their travelers’ checks at these branches as well at some of the larger banks.

You can use your Visa or MasterCard to get cash advance from many of the ATMs. However, many establishments in New York including shopping centers, stores, and restaurants except credit cards and the most common are Visa and MasterCard (if your non-US issued credit card is valid for use in the United States). There are also establishments in the city that accept Diners Club and American Express but not as many compared to Visa and MasterCard.
