Manhattan, New York City

Downtown Manhattan

Downtown Manhattan is an area of Manhattan located south of 14th street, comprising of Lower Manhattan and several distinct neighborhoods. Lower Manhattan is situated on the southern tip of Manhattan Island and is the city’s Financial District. There are seven neighborhoods north of Lower Manhattan, each with its own distinct character and worth visiting or at least a passing through.

Lower Manhattan
Towering buildings dominate Lower Manhattan’s Financial District and an area often seen in postcards and tourist brochures. Within the Financial District is Wall Street, which is the heartbeat of the U.S. economy and home of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) as well as several banking institutions. Nearby is South Street Seaport, a historical area of Manhattan with some of the oldest buildings in New York City. The Whitehall Ferry Terminal to board the Staten Island Ferry to Staten Island is in Lower Manhattan.

Neighborhoods
One of the livelier neighborhoods in Downtown Manhattan is Chinatown. The neighborhood's oriental character and lively atmosphere attracts many visitors here. Greenwich Village was once a bohemian neighborhood and is still a colorful area of New York City, occupied by several Off and Off-Off Broadway theaters. Another is the Lower East Side, which was once a poor Jewish neighborhood but now occupied by trendy boutiques along Orchard Street.

Liberty Island and Ellis Island
Across the Hudson River from Downtown Manhattan are Ellis Island and Liberty Island, home of the Statue of Liberty. To get to Ellis Island and Liberty Island, you can take the ferry service departing from the terminal at Battery Park in Downtown Manhattan. However, expect long waits to board the ferries especially during the summer months with hordes of tourists waiting to board.
