Manhattan, New York City

Broadway Theaters

The Broadway Theater District in New York City is located in Midtown Manhattan from 42nd to 53rd Streets between Sixth and Eighth Avenues. You cannot miss the Theater District with Times Square being the center point. Shows at the Broadway theaters are large-scale productions performed by professionals and often casting big name stars. Performances at the theaters here are among the best in the country and a visit to New York City would not be complete without attending a Broadway production.

There are nearly 40 Broadway theaters in the Theater District, each with a seating capacity of at least 500. Among the Broadway theaters are the Ambassador Theater, Imperial Theater, New Amsterdam Theater, Neil Simon Theater, and the Minskoff Theatre. Though the Lincoln Center is located outside the Theater District in Uptown Manhattan, some consider the venue as part of the Broadway theaters due to its quality productions.

Broadway theaters generate nearly $1 billion in revenue each year. However, Broadway productions are some of the most expensive and often casting leading stars from the film and television industry. Performances are commercial productions and as long as a show attracts a large audience, it will continue to run. However, some shows are on limited engagement or run on an intermittent basis.

Because of the high production costs, Broadway theater tickets range from $80 to $140. Tickets for the latest and more popular productions are often the most expensive, though longer running productions usually cost less. However, discounted tickets are sometimes available just before curtain time and for matinee performances. You can purchase tickets from the theaters’ box offices, ticket booths in Times Square (Broadway Concierge and Ticket Center), and at several online ticketing sites.
