Comedy Clubs 


New Yorkers are often portrayed as serious and without a sense of humor. This is far from the truth and Manhattan is a great place for those in search for laughs, especially stand-up comedy. A matter of fact, many famous comedians once established their acts in Manhattan including Jerry Seinfeld, Andy Kaufman, Rodney Dangerfield, and Jackie Gleason. There are several comedy theaters and clubs in the borough with performances from newbies to professional comedians.

The National Comedy Theater at 36th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues, involves comedians playing out scenes base on audience suggestions. The shows are tremendously hilarious and outrageous but suitable for all ages. Carolines on Broadway is a popular comedy club in Times Square and well-known for its stand-up comedies. Famous stand-up comedians that have performed here include Jerry Seinfeld, Paul Reubens, Jay Leno, and Dave Chappelle. Another in Times Square is the Times Square Comedy Club at Eighth Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Streets.

The Gotham Comedy Club is in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. Television shows recorded at the club include the Last Comic Standing and Live at Gotham. The Comedy Cellar is in the heart of Greenwich Village at MacDougal Street. Comedians that have performed here include Dave Chappelle and Gary Shandling. Another comedy club is Dangerfield's, located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan at First Avenue between 61st and 62nd Streets. The late comedian Rodney Dangerfield started the club in 1969 and known to surprise the audience with special guests performing unannounced.
