Museum of the American Indian 

 
 

The George Gustav Heye Center is the New York City branch of the National Museum of the American Indian. The museum is part of the Smithsonian Institution and housed in a former U.S. Customs House located nearby Battery Park in Downtown Manhattan. The museum describes the history and culture of native Indians not only in the United States but also in Canada, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Entrance is free and opens daily (except Christmas) from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

This museum in New York City occupies two floors and collections on exhibit include artifacts as well as crafts and art from various American Indian tribes or nations. Nearly two-thirds of the museum's exhibits are collections from the United States while the rest are from other regions of the Americas. Many of the collections exhibited have religious and aesthetic significance in native Indian history and culture.

The museum has an extensive collection of photographs and some date back to the 19th century, depicting life and history of the American Indians. The museum regularly organizes music and dance performances from various Indian tribes as well as organizing workshops. Other activities include screening of films including short-films and documentaries related to the lives of the American Indians.
