Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum


The Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum is a military and maritime museum located at Pier 86 on the western side of Midtown Manhattan. The Intrepid Museum is one of the most popular museums in New York City with more than 750,000 visitors visiting the museum each year. The museum centers on the former World War II aircraft carrier the U.S.S. Intrepid. Another vessel moored at Pier 86 is the U.S.S. Growler, a former cruise missile submarine commissioned in 1958.

On and below the deck of the U.S.S. Intrepid are a collection of 30 airplanes and helicopters, mainly military aircraft used by various branches of the U.S. military. Exhibits include the A-12 Blackbird spy plane, Douglas A-4B Skyhawk, Grumman F-14 Tomcat, and Bell AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter. Foreign military aircrafts include the MIG-15, MIG-17, Supermarine F-1 Scimitar, and Dussault Etendard IV M. The legendary Concorde supersonic aircraft is also on exhibit.

There are also fun and exciting interactive exhibits at the Intrepid Museum. Visitors get a chance to experience flying the A-6 Intruder on a cockpit flight simulator. Another is the Gforce Encounter, a two-person cockpit that gives the experience of thrust of flying a supersonic jet plane. Other interactive exhibits include the 14-seat 4D Motion Ride Theater and the Transporter FX Flight Simulator.
