Manhattan, New York City

Upper East Side

The Upper East Side is a wealthy neighborhood in Manhattan located east of Central Park and west of the East River. The Upper East Side is often associated with high society and a sought after neighborhood by the affluent. It is also home to several diplomatic missions to the United States and United Nations, many housed in former mansions. Thus, real estates here are some of the most expensive in New York City as well as the United States.

Upscale Neighborhood
Being an affluent neighborhood of New York City, staying at hotels here generally cost more than outside the neighborhood. Furthermore, the Upper East Side is home to several luxury hotels including the Plaza Hotel, Carlyle Hotel, The Pierre, and Bentley Hotel. Eating out can be just as expensive and there are plenty of options for a meal at an upscale restaurant. With a little effort, you can still find restaurants and cafes that offer meals at down to earth prices. However, do not expect much in terms of cheap eats in this affluent neighborhood.

See & Do
The Upper East Side is home to the city's Museum Mile located nearby Central Park and along Fifth Avenue. Museums and galleries along the Museum Mile include the Asia Society (Museum), Guggenheim Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Within Carl Schurz Park is Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City's mayor. In reality the mayor does not live here and guided tours are available with bookings in advance.

The Upper East Side is also home to some of the most fashionable and exclusive boutiques in New York City. Big name brands here include Valentino, Oscar de la Renta, Michael Kors, and La Perla just to name a few. The main shopping streets in this affluent neighborhood are Madison Avenue and Fifth Avenue. The upscale department store Bloomingdale's is located at Lexington Avenue between 59th and 60th Streets.
