The Falls

Maid of the Mist

The Maid of the Mist is a boat tour that has been taking tourists to the Niagara Falls for more than 150 years. All of the boats used in the tour are named Maid of the Mist, though different boats are identified by a different their Roman numeral. You can board the boats either from the U.S. or Canadian side of the Niagara River, the boats return to the same starting point. In the United States, tourists board the boat at the dock located near the base of the Prospect Point Park Observation Tower.

The tour operates in the warmer months, usually from mid-May to late October during the daylight hours. The boats depart every 15 minutes and each trip last half an hour. All the boats are equipped with powerful engines to sail against the powerful currents. Passengers are given a waterproof poncho (free and to be kept as a souvenir) to keep themselves dry from the mist and spray produced by the falling waters of the Niagara Falls.

The Maid of the Mist is an experience not to be missed and for many tourist a trip of a lifetime. The tour begins at a calm part of the Niagara River and then passes the spectacular American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. The most exhilarating part of the trip is when the boat approaches the curve of the Horseshoe Falls, which is the most powerful of the three waterfalls. You can hear the roar of the cascading water and feel the dense mist of spray touching you.
