Queens, New York City

Jackson Heights

The Queens neighborhood of Jackson Heights is the heart of the South Asian community in New York City with the centerpoint for shopping located in Little India. This South Asian enclave is situated along 74th Street between 37th Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue, and the surrounding area. Most of the stores in Little India are Indian-owned businesses with smaller numbers owned by Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, and Sri Lankans. You are in the right place if you are searching for imported items made from South Asia namely India.

Indians have a fondness for gold and there seems to be a store selling gold jewelry on just about every street corner of Little India. The gold jewelries sold here are 22 rather than 14 carat, which allows for more detail design on the jewelry. There are several stores selling colorful saris, which traditional Indian women in Jackson Heights still wear. Go to Butala Emporium at 74th Street, a treasure trove for Indian made items including saris, fabric, jewelry, music, personal care products, musical instruments, foodstuffs, and cheap trinkets.
