Beaches

South Beach

South Beach is located in the neighborhood of the same name on Staten Island’s East Shore. The beach stretches for almost two miles (3 km), and the northern end of South Beach is a short distance from the Verrazano Bridge that links Staten Island with Brooklyn. The pride of South Beach is the Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk, which runs parallel to the shore. At the beach near Sand Lane is the Dolphin Fountain, comprising of six bronze dolphins with colorful lights illuminating the fountain at night.

The beach here slopes gently into sea, and the water is shallow and the waves calm, making the beach suitable for children. During the warmer months, lifeguards are on duty daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. - swimming not permitted when lifeguards are not on duty and in closed sections. Besides sunbathing and swimming at the beach, the boardwalk is popular with strollers and joggers. Thirsty or need a quick bite, you can find a few snack bars located along the boardwalk.

For deep-water angling, the Ocean Breeze Fishing Pier juts out 835 feet (255 metres) into the sea, one of the longest fishing piers in New York City. Even if you have no plans to fish, the far end of the pier offers scenic views of the bay area and the narrows. There is a park specially created for senior citizens with plenty of benches, checkerboard tables, and bocce courts. In summer, the beach area gets even livelier with free concerts and occasional display of fireworks illuminating the night sky.

Location: Father Capodanno Boulevard (between Lily Pond Avenue and Seaview Avenue).
