Noble Maritime Collection

The Noble Maritime Collection at Staten Island’s Snug Harbor Cultural Center is housed in a building once home for many retired mariners. The museum is devoted to the maritime history of New York Harbor and celebrates the works of John A. Noble (1913-1983), an American mariner and artist who spent much of his time around the harbor area. His works depict the life and culture of the people who once worked along the waterfront through his paintings, drawings, lithographs, and writings.

The centerpiece of the Noble Maritime Collection is the restored Houseboat Studio, once used by John A. Nobles to create many of his work. The Writing Room depicts the history of the mariners’ retirement home through photographs, etchings, paintings, and furnishings. The Dormitory Room is a depiction of the mariners’ room during the early 20th century through its furniture including beds, chairs, and drawers. The Ship Model Gallery features ship models made by mariners and artisans including sailing vessels, steamships, and ships in bottles.
