The Rose Garden includes more than 100 varieties of colorful roses and with a reflecting pool at one end. The Allee (French for avenue) is a green tunnel arch with 120 upright hornbeams, commonly seen in European gardens. The Secret Garden is a garden maze of intricate path influenced by European designs. Another is the Italian Garden, inspired by the garden at Villa Gamberaia in the Italian city of Florence. The White Garden resembles a European court garden inspired by Vita Sackville-West’s garden in Sissinghurst, England.

The highlight of the visit to the Botanical Garden is the Chinese Scholar’s Garden, covering one-acre (half hectare). It is the only authentic Chinese garden in New York City with its bamboo forest path, rockery, waterfalls, pavilions, and koi-filled pond. Opened in 1999, a team of 40 Chinese artists and craftmen constructed the initial components in China and then came to Staten Island for the final construction. The garden’s design is based on the 18th century Suzhou Couple's Retreat Garden in China.
